My Personal Experience with Laughter Yoga

Sukumar Satpathy

Brittany Marie, USA: All of 24, I have a list of health conditions like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lyme Disease, Chronic Migraine, Fibromyalgia, Depression, Anxiety, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I had been homebound and quite isolated for eight years, but Laughter Yoga is one helped me to cope with my problems and learn to keep a positive mental attitude towards life.

I took up Laughter Yoga in 2018, and it almost immediately made me feel more energized and stronger. I became much happier and laughed more easily and more often, and my chronic pain became less intense. I formed friendships with the other people, and started to feel connected and a part of a community! Living like a recluse for many years, it was amazing for me to start making friends.

After a few months of Laughter Yoga and experiencing the enormous health benefits, I was inspired to help others and bring more joy into their lives. I made another group, and was able to see all of the ways that the members of my group benefited from the laughter sessions.

One reason I love Laughter Yoga is because it is a form of movement, albeit a very gentle form of movement! I love that it can be adapted for pretty much any ability. When I first started doing Laughter Yoga, I had just transitioned from being bedridden to being able to sit up in a chair. I was not able to lift my arms above my head, and so I did all of the exercises sitting, and I adapted the arm movements to whatever worked for me. Now, I can raise my arms up as high as I want, and I’m able to hold them up for longer periods of time!
