No Money Laughter Ha Ha Ha
When everyone is talking about global financial crisis and recession, all we need is a good laugh. I'm not kidding; this could be a boom time for Laughter Yoga! Check out Google news - Laughter clubs are attracting lot of media attention as this could be the best coping mechanism to go through this economic turmoil.

What we do in recession matters the most

The quality of life is not about what happens to us; rather it depends upon what we do when something happens to us. There is nothing new about recession. It is just a part of the Universal Plan. It seems that the world economy is driven and engineered by artificial booms that are not based on real needs. In fact, the current recession is a kind of technical correction which was needed to ground the economy.

There is no point in grumbling. But, we need to do something. It may sound weird, but it is during hard times that we need to laugh the most to lift the stress and keep our spirits alive. Very few people can laugh in these challenging times, but everybody can do Laughter Yoga because it is a bodily oriented exercise routine. It brings real physiological and psychological changes by releasing certain chemicals which make you feel good. It gives a new perspective and a positive mental attitude to go through difficult times.

More Laughter Yoga in the Business World

These days I’m getting more enquiries about conducting corporate seminars and opening new laughter clubs but there is a difference – people are looking for good discounts and bargains.  My suggestion to all laughter leaders, teachers and laughter club members is to go ahead and spread more laughter, whether they get paid or just do voluntary work. As our mission stands, we should help the world to get over the crisis with a good laugh. Do not worry about the financial outcome – the satisfaction gained by making people laugh is more than enough.  As the law of Karma says – ‘If you do good, you will be rewarded sooner or later.’ There was a time between 1995 and 2000 that I did not earn a penny from Laughter Yoga. On the contrary, I was spending money from my own pocket, but it was worth it when I saw the smiles on people’s faces.

The Difference between Needs and Wants

Another thought which crossed my mind was that we need to be more mindful about over expenditure. We should realize the importance of money and reduce our expenses by understanding the difference between needs and wants. Needs are minimum basic survival requirements like food and shelter, whereas wants are comforts and pleasures we seek to enhance happiness. Unfortunately, these make us more dependent and only provide a temporary ‘feel good’ sensation, because the minute we don’t get them, we are miserable. Therefore, one should learn live without these non essentials and focus on fulfilling basic and real needs that actually keep one happy for a longer time.

Yoga teaches one to live with minimum needs and wants. There is a yogic practice focused on making us strong physically and mentally. It is called TAPA. It seems that the current economic situation is helping us to become tough and hardy by default. In fact, it is good for us. After all, the tastiest food in the world is not Italian, Indian or Chinese. It is the food you get when you're hungry. So contemplate and think about your needs and wants. Get serious about your needs, but take it easy on your wants.

Do No Money Laughter Exercise

Nowadays, I do one laughter exercise everyday without fail. It is ‘No Money Laughter.’ I put my hands inside my pockets, pull them inside out and laugh. I recommend laughter clubs should include this exercise everyday for few months to help people remain happy and positive. It is indeed a whimsical way of looking at life but it is the best.

There will never be a recession in the world of Laughter Yoga and no taxes to pay on laughing…!!!

Skype Laughter

Laughter Clubs are really going places. First, it was the Phone Laughter clubs and now Skype Laughter Clubs on the internet. You can just call on Skype and laugh with your ‘laughter buddies’. A very creative and inspiring idea, it took off when a Finnish author writing a book on the use of social media on the internet got interested in the idea of Skype Laughter.

Following the initiative, the first Laughter session included the Laughter Yoga founder; Dr. Madan Kataria together with Ines from Austria, Anu and Michelle. They had a blast and decided to continue to their laughter meeting on Skype.

So now every Sunday at 10 am GMT there will a 10 minute laughter session on Skype. Anyone is welcome to join the club, chat and become a part of the Laughter Yoga family worldwide.

Story from Inner Spirit

Nothing Is Impossible…

My philosophy of life is that everything is possible and nothing is impossible. Every problem has a solution. All you need is a creative mind like children who play a lot and are therefore very creative. Physical playfulness leads to playful mental attitude which is the seat of creativity. In fact, whenever I have some problem, I start playing around with ideas and suddenly something pops up in my head.  Ingenuity leads to beautiful insights which finally help you find a solution.

Here are two beautiful stories that were a result of my intentions to find some solution. The most important thing here is that I always believe that there is something going to happen and I will find a solution.

Cooking Underwear!

…Have you ever cooked your underwear? Well, if you haven’t just read on and find out what’s with cooking underwear…

In October, 2004, my wife Madhuri and I went to Rome on a Laughter tour. While in transit, we left most of our luggage at Frankfurt airport as later we were supposed to take a flight back home from there. We just took two handbags with few clothes to Rome.

Laughter leader Laura had arranged for a home stay with one of her friends. The owner of the house was a very sophisticated German lady in her late 30s. She was very well organised like most Germans and was a perfectionist. The house was very neat and clean and everything looked in order. Madhuri was worried about my messing up with the house. She taught me how to close the door very gently so that our host sleeping in the next room would not wake up. She instructed me to open the tap of a wash-basin in the kitchen very gently as it made a funny noise. She was always concerned about me making too much noise and disturbing the host. I tried my level best to remember her instructions, but there was no way I could minimise the sound of the toilet flush and running tap water in the bathroom.

After two days our host decided to go to her aunt’s house leaving us alone in the house. One morning, I got up at 7 am and after my laughter and breathing exercises decided to go for shower. I realised I didn’t have a spare underwear. The one I wore a day before was still wet. I had an option of wearing the same underwear for another day but I hated the thought.

Though in a bit of a dilemma, I made up my mind to dry the other one.  I searched the house for any gadget that would help me in my venture. Even a hairdryer could have done the trick. But alas, I found nothing. Suddenly while looking around in the kitchen, I noticed a huge frying pan. I got a brainwave. Why not heat the pan on a low gas flame and just dry the underwear in it.I was a little worried about the elastic that might melt so I kept moving the underwear continuously and did not allow the elastic to stay in touch with the pan for any length of time. Guess what? It took five minutes to dry my underwear. Even the elastic was intact. Now’s that’s what I call being creative. I actually had a ‘crispy stir fried underwear’!!!! Ha ha

Madhuri and I were in splits but were hesitant to tell our host about this. She may not have reacted well people cooking garments in her pan!!!

This makes me believe that every one of us has infinite potential of the mind. Usually we use just a small part of our brain but if we challenge its unlimited potential and higher intelligence to flow; everything is possible.

Heating Pizza with a Hairdryer!

In 2007, I visited Canada for a workshop. One day I returned

to my hotel after an evening walk and was quite famished. I thought of ordering food in my room service but it was too late and the hotel did not take any room service orders after 10 pm.  Suddenly I realised I had some left over pizza in my fridge. But it was too cold and there was no microwave in the room or any other facility to warm it up.

I started challenging my mind. How can I heat a pizza?

I kept searching for something that might help. Finally, I landed up in the bathroom and my eyes went on the hairdryer hanging on the wall. Eureka! That was it! I put the hairdryer on and swirled it over my pizza. I had done it again. I laughed as I ate my dinner – nice and warm. Now, how’s that for an ingenious idea?

This is a short story from Dr. K’s forthcoming book. You are also welcome to share your stories for the book.
